One thing that amazes me about Smeg's costume is his profoundly low-cut tank top. Damn, boy! Them tiddies are about to escape. The chest fuzz has already made a break for it. Not that we're complaining, of course.
I love drawing David Collins because he's got such pretty, sparkly eyes. And I love that his comedy isn't mean spirited. Never once have I seen him punch down at marginalized groups — his success is tangible proof that actually funny people don't need to rely on cruelty to get a laugh.
For this drawing, I used Lisa Glanz's Nitty Gritty brushes for Procreate to get this tasty, sketchy quality. They were a blast to use. (Not sponsored.)
I'm really intrigued about Smeg's personality. As of the time of this writing (and drawing), we've only seen a few half-second trailer glimpses and several promotional shots (like in Empire magazine.) But even with this limited amount of data, I just have a hard time picturing Smeg as mean spirited. Perhaps a bit of a shit at times, sure, but he seems like he'd be a huggable little guy. And David Collins has such kind eyes.
This picture utilizes pastel artboard and colored pencils. I like the scratchiness. And of course, the color scheme isn't exactly typical for canon, but I like doing that. Mixing things up is fun.
In the second trailer for "Furiosa," I spotted Smeg in the background a few times. In one appearance, he was flailing around behind Chris Hemsworth. Smeg looked like he was being attacked by bees, or maybe like he was the only one experiencing an earthquake. Everyone in the background appeared to be staring at him. Hilarious out of context. (I don't know what the context is yet, lmao).
Anyway, here's our boy flailing around.
